Feather Directions
tree skirt step 1 STEP 1. We’ll first cut out four squares of fabric measuring 18X18, 27X27, 36X36, and 45X 45. We alternated patterns and solids, but feel free to get creative with your fabric choices.
tree skirt step 2 STEP 2. Now we will cut our circles out of the squares. I find that the easiest way to do this is to fold the square into quarters (fold once and then again) and then with a ruler or measuring tape, measure the radius of the circle from the center fold, marking the path, and then cutting along the path through all four layers. You could also use a compass for this or any other prefered circle cutting technique.
tree skirt step 3 STEP 3. Stack the circles from largest to smallest. Cut a circle out of the center, making sure to cut through all layers. Add pin pleats around this interior circle and then sew them down to create a bit of ruffle.
tree skirt step 4 STEP 4. Finish the circle edges by hemming and trimming with marabou boas. Boas are most easily sewn down by hand, tacking the center down every inch or so.
tree skirt step 5 STEP 5. The skirt should look finished now! All that’s left is one slit down the entire radius of the skirt. Now you can wrap it around any tree! Feel free to hem the slit edges or add buttons to hold it together.
